The Series 60 is a Symbian OS-based platform for handsets that are to be used on GSM, GPRS or 3G mobile networks. It gives manufacturers access to basic building blocks, such as Texas Instruments’ OMAP processor architecture and Nokia’s internally developed smart phone source code.
Nokia is opening up its source code and signing handset manufacturers to its Series 60 platform to accelerate and maximize interoperability. The Series 60 is licensed to Nokia, Siemens, Matsushita and Samsung. These four companies control about 60% of the global handset market between them.
