The Red Orb Entertainment division of software publisher Broderbund Software Inc said that Riven: The Sequel to Myst has now sold more than 1 million units since its release on October 31, 1997. The game was developed by Cyan Inc of New York over four years at a cost of around $10m and is the successor to Myst, which was also a gaming hit for Broderbund. Myst has also had a revival on the back of the success of Riven, holding the second position in top selling games figures from market analyst firm PC Data of Reston, Virginia. Broderbund has not yet announced its second quarter results. The gaming success did have a positive effect on Broderbund’s first quarter results. In December, the Novato, California-based company reported net profits up 18.9% at $10.6m on revenue up 62.8% to $62.3m. Net earnings per share rose 16.7% to $0.49.
