Research In Motion has posted an increase of 41% in its third quarter revenue to $3.92bn, compared to $2.78bn in the same period last year.

The company received approximately 82% of its revenue by selling devices, 14% from service, 2% from software and 2% from others. It shipped about 10.1m devices in the quarter and now has a subscriber base of approximately 36m. It added approximately 4.4m net new BlackBerry subscriber accounts during the quarter.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company posted a net income of $628.4m, or $1.10 per share diluted, compared to net income of $396.3m, or $0.69 per share diluted, for the third quarter of 2008.

For the three months ended November 28, 2009, the total cash, cash equivalents, short-term and long-term investments were $2.41bn, compared to $2.50bn at the end of the previous quarter, a decrease of $90m over the prior quarter.

Jim Balsillie, co-CEO at Research In Motion, said: RIM is experiencing a great start to the holiday buying season and the strong Q3 results and Q4 outlook clearly reflect the strength of our diversified product portfolio as well as the success of our efforts to expand into broader customer segments and new geographies while maintaining our strong position in North America.

Looking ahead, the company expects revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 to be in the range of $4.2bn to $4.4bn and earnings per share to be in the range of $1.23-$1.31 per share diluted. Gross margin for Q4 is expected to be around 43.5% and net subscriber account additions to be in the range of 4.4-4.7m.
