Research In Motion (RIM) has reported revenue of $5.6bn for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011, up 36% from $4.1bn for the same period last year. Revenue was up 1% sequentially.
The BlackBerry maker received approximately 81% of its revenue by selling devices, 16% from service, and 3% from software and other revenues.
RIM shipped about 14.9 million BlackBerry smartphones for a total of 52.3 million smartphones in fiscal 2011.
The company’s net income for the quarter was $934m, or $1.78 per share diluted, compared with net income of $911m, or $1.74 per share diluted, in the prior quarter and net income of $710m, or $1.27 per share diluted, in the same quarter last year.
For the full year 2011, the company reported revenue of $19.9bn, up 33% from $15bn last year, net income was $3.4bn, or $6.34 per share diluted, up 47% over FY10.
RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie said as the company enters fiscal 2012, they are in a position to benefit from the continuing convergence of the mobile communications and mobile computing markets.
"We are laying a strong foundation for RIM’s expanding market opportunity through focused investments and we are extremely excited about our smartphone, tablet and platform roadmaps," Balsillie said.
For the first quarter of fiscal 2012, the company expects revenues to range between $5.2bn and $5.6bn, and earnings per share to be in the range of $1.47 and $1.55 per share diluted.
