V32bis modems are begining to make it to the UK market. Racal Electronics Plc’s Hook, Hampshire-based Racal Datacom has launched its first offering, the Maxam VII+ costing UKP1,000. V32bis modems can run at raw speeds of up to 14.4Kbps with greater effective throughputs when data compression is used. Racal’s new box includes the V42/bis error correction and compression standard, which it says can produce effective throughputs of 35Kbps. Strange things, effective throughputs they depend so much on the data that is being sent. Sunnyvale, California-based Telebit Corp has just launched the T3000, which also uses V32bis and V42bis. Telebit quotes effective throughputs at up to 57.6Kbps but was unable to find anyone capable of explaining how the $1,100 device managed this feat, or indeed, how it managed to get a standard serial port to run that fast.
