San Jose-based R-Byte Inc says its RB100, the first in a family of 3.5 form factor 4mm digital audio tape drives to the DDS tape format, is the highest performance 3.5 digital audio drive. It stores 1.34Gb on a 4mm 60 metre tape cassette, and 2.01Gb on a 90 metre cassette and has a 233Kbytes-per-second sustained data transfer rate, nearly 30% faster than competitive 4mm DAT products, a 15 seconds average search speed, 25% faster than competitive products, and embedded SCS Interface with SCSI-2 commands. It rewinds in just 15 seconds; has auto calibration; and automatic tape length sensor. Samples July; $975 in OEM volumes.
