Psion Plc, London W microelectronics engineering company best known for its Organiser line of pocket computers, is looking to diversify into modems and related telecommunications products with its first acquisition since it went public in March. It plans to pay an initial UKP4.5m cash for Dacom Systems Ltd of Milton Keynes, placing 2.85m new shares at 145 pence to raise UKP4.1m and meeting the balance internally. In the year to May 1988, Dacom reported pre-tax profits up 104% at UKP598,000 on turnover of UKP4.6m; net assets were UKP982,000 and the order book was UKP3.7m at the end of October. Founded in 1981, Dacom designs, develops and manufactures dial-up modems, particularly for manufacturers of portable computers. It currently employs some 90 people. As well as looking for synergy with its own future products, Psion looks to expand Dacom’s busin ess by putting its products through its existing continental distribution network.
