Herndon, Virginia-based internet service provider PSINet Inc has announced the completion of a long-term acquisition of STM-1 fiber optic capacity from various carriers in Europe, representing a 21,000-km network linking 30 major cities. The company said yesterday that it plans initially involve the construction of three interlocking rings at the STM-1 (155 Mbit/sec) level, replacing an existing E-3 (34 Mbit/sec) infrastructure. The network will link PSINet’s businesses in London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Geneva and Zurich by the end of this year, adding cities as far afield as Stockholm, Vienna and Madrid in the year 2000.
