Procom Technology Inc, Costa Mesa, California is upping the ante in the 3.5 add-on market by coming out with a 2.88Mb floppy drive for XT- and AT-alikes that can read, write and format 2.88Mb, 1.44Mb and 720Kb disks – because it reckons that IBM will shortly announce 2.88Mb 3.5 disk drives as the new standard for the PS/2 family. The PXF 2880 have a transfer rate of 1Mbps and access time of 94mS for 2.8Mb floppies. The drives are fully compatible with MS-DOS 3.3 and above and cost $460 with a controller that includes a separate BIOS for compatibility with the expanded capacity. The PXF 2880 co-exists with any other floppy controller.
