Poqet Computer Corp duly introduced its first pen-driven computer as the PoqetPad, which weighs in at just 1 lb 3 oz. The MS-DOS-based system is designed for applications such as field inspection, automated forms completion and remote data collection, as a replacement for handheld data collection terminals or paper forms. It is driven by two AA-size alkaline batteries that last at least and costs from $2,000. It measures just 9.65 by 4.59 by 1.26 and has a 7.25 diagonal, which can be configured to show forms in either landscape or portrait mode with graphics and multiple font sizes. In standard format, the CGA-compatible screen shows 80 characters by 25 lines, with status line. In graphics mode, it provides 640 by 200 screen resolution. It uses the NEC Corp V20HL microprocessor – a super-8088, and has 640Kb system memory and 1Mb ROM to store the operating system, pen-support and handwriting recognition software, and utilities. Programs and data are stored on memory cards and has two slots for them, each taking cards with up to 4Mb. It comes with MS-DOS 3.3 and the Poqet PenShell with NestorWriter handwriting recognition software, mouse emulation for the pen, and a virtual, on-screen keyboard and numeric keypad pre-loaded. The company has licensed the PenConnect file transfer utility from Traveling Software Inc and the PenRight! pen software developed by GRiD Systems Corp and in use since 1989. Applications already developed for PenRight! can be converted. It has also licensed the Pen Pal Tool kit from Pen Pal Associates Inc for creating applications for PenRight! software; both are optional add-ons. Shipments start next month.
