Spain and Poland are to study the possibility of co-operation in the telecommunications field following a recent meeting between the Polish Communications Minister and Telefonica de Espana SA’s president. At the meeting, they agreed it would be useful to extend the number of phone circuits between Poland and Spain and also looked at the possibility of Poland using the Spanish telephone network in its communications with Latin America and the Far East as well as that of closer co-operation in new services, particularly data transmission. Both countries’ phone companies currently have 26 direct circuits between the two countries. An important matter on the agenda was the development of a future trans-European fibre optic network to connect Frankfurt with Moscow via Berlin and Warsaw. This is a network of interest to Telefonica as it may give it an entree into the project to connect Europe and Japan by the overland route.
