Poland’s government will decide on a partial sell-off of the country’s telecommunications monopoly TPSA in late 1996 or early next year. The government would probably first offer a minority stake in TPSA, which did $350m net last year but would later consider increasing the offered equity. It gave no more details but earlier said that privatization options under consideration would be floating a stake on the Warsaw Stock Exchange or selling equity to a strategic investor or to a group of passive investors. It also confirmed plans to allow private companies to operate inter-city telephone connections by 2000. Liberalization of international connections could come at a later date. The country wants to issue about 49 licenses for local telephone operators in public tenders.
