Palm Computing is planning to launch a handheld with a color display by the end of the year, addressing one of the major user complaints about the devices. The new president of the 3Com Corp subsidiary, Alan Kessler, told the Business Journal that Palm was working on a color display – although he did not specify for which models – and two major revisions of the PalmOS, will be introduced by the end of the year.
Andrea Johnson, product manager for the Palm III series, said that the company was testing a number of different color display technologies. The main issue for Palm is delivering color without substantially affecting battery life. Johnson also hinted that the introduction of color might mean a revamping of the Palm user interface.
Color has been a chink in Palm’s armor since Microsoft announced CE support for color displays in February. Symbian Plc also added color support to the latest release of its EPOC operating system last month. á
