The Japan Electronics Industry Association has compiled figures that indicate that the slowdown in the Japanese personal computer industry is continuing. Sales figures for the April-to-June quarter show a rise of just 1% in value terms to $2,561m. Domestic shipments by number were about even with the same period last year, but fell 2% by value. Overall figures (including exports) were up in value terms and 21% in unit terms, because of the inclusion of three foreign companies, Nippon Digital Equipment Corp, IBM Japan Ltd and Nippon Unisys Kaisha for the first time. Exports of notebooks to the US market in particular were up, to 201,000 units, including those with thin-film transistor screens.
