The Tokyo, Japan-based telcoms giant is an important new addition to the OSDL’s membership, as it will add not only its telecoms expertise to the Labs’ Data Center Linux and Carrier Grade Linux working groups, but also its experience as a corporate Linux user.
NTT’s laboratories plan to use open source software in enterprise computing systems and various applications, commented Yuji Inoue, senior vice president of NTT. Through these activities we contribute to open source software communities.
We are joining OSDL, he added, to contribute together as NTT group companies in establishing Linux as the competing platform for telecom carrier systems. NTT research laboratories, the company’s R&D arm, will lead the group’s open source software development plans.
The membership of the Beaverton, Oregon-based OSDL has grown rapidly in recent months as the likes of Novell Inc, NEC Soft Ltd, and Beijing Co-Create Open Source Software Company Ltd have been added to the list that already includes multiple Linux vendors as well as ISVs and IHVs and Linux user Unilever Plc.
The OSDL is also home to Linux creator and maintainer, Linus Torvalds, and Linux maintainer, Andrew Morton.
