Unix and Windows NT will share the workstation marketplace in the near future and NT growth may result in new vendors beyond the big five, according to a survey by Datapro Information Services Group. It found 23% of Unix workstation users are already working on NT and another 22% are evaluating it. It also predicted NT will grow beyond the under $10,000 low-end desktop market but that 80% to 90% of the application workload over the next two years will still be dominated by Unix. Datapro said NT’s emergence in the workstation arena may mean new vendors beyond DEC Corp, Hewlett-Packard Corp, IBM Corp, Silicon Graphics Inc and Sun Microsystems Inc. Respondents said the most important workstation functions are multivendor support, Windows applications support and support for a single Unix operating system. The survey was based on responses from 100 IT professionals with Unix workstations in the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific.
