It turned out that negotiations had not advanced sufficiently yesterday for Novell Inc to announce its intentions to hand Unix over to X/Open Co Ltd at Unix/Expo – embarrassingly, since it had planned a full page advertising spread in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal to let everyone know the glorious news, but had to withdraw it at the last minute; instead, it confined itself to saying that it intends to expand the Unix market with a unified standard for integrating advanced applications and services with the desktop systems now in use and that it is accelerating integration between Unix and NetWare – new releases will provide common network management, common system directories and other features that will enable the two to be integrated; and by the fourth quarter, Unix source code will be provided as a complete ready-to-ship product identical to its UnixWare offering.
