At Networld+InterOp ’96 in Atlanta, Novell Inc released a CD containing alpha and beta versions of IntranetWare support of Java, Novell Replication Services, Novell Distributed Print Services, Asynchronous Transfer Mode local network emulation and the next phase of TCP/IP deployment on IntranetWare. The Java Application Environment for IntranetWare, now in pre-alpha test, includes the Java Virtual Machine and Java Class Libraries. Together, these are designed to enable applications written using Java to run on IntranetWare servers. The implementation is based on version 1.02 of the Java application environment from JavaSoft Inc. Also included is a graphical user environment for the IntranetWare server claimed to support the full range of functionality available to Java programmers. Novell Replication Services, in beta test, is designed to enable network administrators to selectively replicate both whole directories and individual files from one server to any number of other servers . Replica servers can also act as a master to their own set of replica servers. Replication of files such as documents, graphic images, audio and video clips and HyperText Mark-up Language files and system files such as applications, tools and client or server operating system files is supported. The new technology also includes a snap-in to NWAdmin, IntranetWare’s directory-based management utility, that provides replication management and synchronization scheduling. Novell Distributed Print Services, in pre-alpha test, is a new distributed, client-server architecture for sharing networked peripherals. It takes advantage of Novell Directory Services to provide easier access to printers and simpler management of printers and print services on the network. Asynchronous Transfer Mode LAN Emulation, also pre-alpha testing, enables organizations to build virtual local networks for groups of users in geographically separate locations. It complies with ATM Forum standards for signaling and local network emulation. The next phase of TCP/IP on IntranetWare is also out in a pre-alpha version. The IP implementation can now interface IP directly to the NetWare Core Protocol. Novell has also announced the NEST Server Software Development Kit v1.0, designed to enable manufacturers of storage subsystems to add network server and directory capabilities into CD servers, RAID systems, tape libraries and other peripheral storage kit. It ships early in 1997. An Office-specific version o f the kit is also out for hard-copy output device vendors.
