Northern Telecom Inc and Novell Inc have an agreement to develop networks incorporating Northern Telecom’s Meridian Data Networking System, Meridian DNS, and Novell’s newly introduced Portable NetWare. Northern Telecom claims that Meridian DNS merges, accesses and transports services with network-based user services into a single architecture. Meridian DNS access is provided for terminals including IBM 3274-type controllers, personal computers and ASCII devices, as well as 802.3 Ethernet and 802.5 attached devices; Northern Telecom claims protocol support includes SNA, TCP/IP, and X25. Processors can be added to modify networking applications; Novell NetWare will be implemented on one such processor to create enterprise-wide local area networks and corporate data networks. The companies claim other capabilities include end-to-end session management, remote backup and distributed management.
