NeXT Computer Inc’s strategy is getting muddy again: it is still in process of getting the NeXTstep and OpenStep object-oriented front ends established, but in 1996 it plans a major new version of NeXTstep code-named Mecca with the tag Why stop at Cairo when you can go all the way to Mecca – but the problem is that Mecca, due in 1996, will feature a new user interface, and NeXTstep applications will have to be rewritten for Mecca; NeXT says it will provide tools that will allow companies to do the conversion in as little as one person-month, but that is a lo-o-o-ng time – unless you get in 30 computers, you can’t get it done in a day even if you’ve got 30 people who could work on it.
