Intel Corp has announced a new version of its 32-bit iRMX-III real-time operating system which permits users to run MS-DOS as a task while iRMX-III is running. The enhanced version, DOS/RMX, enables developers to run true MS-DOS and supports the use of Microsoft Windows as well as allowing MS-DOS applications to be converted to a 32-bit environment and gain access to 4Gb of memory. To run DOS/RMX, the 80386 or 80486 board boots MS-DOS which loads into low memory. A terminate and stay resident MS-DOS program loads iRMX-III in memory space above the 1Mb address range, and once it is loaded and running, it encapsulates MS-DOS and makes it into the lowest priority task available. After loading Windows, users may switch between iRMX-III and Windows screens, and iRMX-III can write into a window, providing real-time updates. DOS/RMX is available now and the run-time kit costs UKP84, while the development version costs UKP1,633.
