As expected (CI No 1,756), Compaq Computer Corp moved into the modular personal computer business yesterday with a Deskpro line claimed to offer the highest degree of modularity available. Four Deskpro/M models were introduced: the 386/25M, 486/16M and 486/25M (using the new 16MHz and 25MHz 80486SX chips), and the 486/33M. Compaq’s so-called intelligent modularity architecture divides the machine up into five distinct subsystems – processor, video graphics controller, EISA bus, input-output and memory expansion – all on separate boards. Customers can re-configure their own machines more easily, and servicing is simplified. In-house designed application specific integrated circuits automatically adjust to new processor speeds. Compaq also offers a credit for returning the original processor board when upgrading. They are available in diskless, 60Mb, 120Mb and (for the 486/33M) 340Mb options. Prices start at UKP3,280 for the Model 386/25M with 60Mb disk, rising to UKP4,930 for the 33M with 120Mb. Compaq also reduced prices on existing Deskpro models by up to 15%.
