Hoping to stimulate developer appetite for Netscape Directory Server, Netscape Corp has released the source code for its software developers kit (SDK). The company also plans to release the source code to the SDK for its administration component, Netscape Console. Making its source code freely available is part of the new business model Netscape adopted in April (CI No 3,380) on advice from Linux inventor Linus Torvald, among others. The rationale behind source-available software is that developers will donate their time to writing patches and features in exchange for new updates and better software. Netscape Directory Server was adopted Hewlett-Packard Co earlier this week (CI No 3,401).
