Netscape Communications Corp will feature a link to an internet- based telephone calling service on its Communicator browser. Future versions of Communicator and of the NetCenter portal site will sport an icon for IDT Corp’s Net2Phone service. By clicking on the icon, users should be able to make low-cost, long-distance telephone calls from their PCs. IDT says it charges from 10 cents a minute for calls from anywhere in the world to the US.
Where Netscape boasts 50 million downloads of its browser software, IDT’s calling service has only 250,000 regular users. We think we’ll be able to attract a lot more eyeballs, IDT chief executive Howie Balter told the Wall Street Journal. IDT will pay an undisclosed fee to Netscape for promotion and advertising, and will share any revenues arising from the deal.
