The Web Server Survey shows 10.7 million host names have been registered since June 2003, an increase of 26.1%, and the strongest sustained period of growth since February 2000 to February 2001, during which 16.9 million host names were added.
The number of active sites is also on the rise, hitting 23.6 million in June, up from 23.2 million the previous month. Meanwhile, more secure sites are also being deployed. According to Netcraft’s recent Secure Server Survey, the number of servers using Secure Socket Layer encryption grew 56.7% between April 2003 and April 2004.
Breaking the latest figures down by platform shows that the open source Apache web server remains by far the most popular, with 67.2% of developer sites and 68.7% of active sites. Apache maintained a healthy lead over Microsoft Corp’s various web server platforms, with Microsoft representing 21.4% of developer sites and 23.1% of active sites surveyed in June.
Sun Microsystems Inc’s various web server technologies were third in terms of developer sites, according to Netcraft, with 3.2% share, but fourth in terms of active sites, with just 0.8% share. Zeus Technology Ltd completed the picture with 1.5% of developer sites and 1.1% of active sites.
