NEC Corp has launched a new V800 family of 32-bit RISC microprocessors with the V810 or uPD70732, designed for embedded applications. The part has a five-stage pipeline and 1Kb on-chip instruction cache, and delivers 15 MIPS at 25MHz. The clock speed depends on the power supply – it needs 5V to do 25MHz, runs at 15MHz with a 3V supply and 10MHz at 2.2V. In 0.8 micron CMOS, it integrates 240,000 transistors. Two other versions of the V800 chip are under development: a 33MHz V820 on which the V810 core and peripheral functions such as a programmable timer, serial and direct memory access controller and interrupt controller are integrated; and a small package V815, are under development. Samples of the V810 are out now at $58; volume is set for October, starting at a rate of 50,000 parts a month.
