NEC Home Electronics (USA) Inc in Wood Dale, Illinois and NEC Information Systems Inc in Boxborough, Massachusetts jointly announced the ProSpeed CSX personal computer for the US market, claiming it to be the first colour laptop computer to be made available in the US. The CSX uses a 16MHz 80386SX processor and the liquid crystal diode display puts up 16 colours at a time from a palette of 64 colours. The screen is a 600 dot by 400-line compensated twisted nematic colour display that uses technology similar to that applied in NEC’s black and white displays on the other ProSpeed portables. It supports EGA and CGA graphics modes and VGA/EGA/CGA text modes. It measures 15 by 14.4 by 4 and weighs a gut-wrenching 18.5 lbs including the built-in power supply. It costs $8,500 for the 42Mb hard disk version, $9,500 with 100Mb disk and is set for shipment in mid-October.
