Speaking in New Delhi at the India Today Conclave, Karnik said that, in the year to March 31 2005, the Indian IT industry would also provide direct employment to 1m people.
Looking ahead to the next four years, Karnik stated that India was well placed to record software exports of $50bn, but denied that the country could now be called an IT superpower, arguing that India had captured only 2% of the global IT market.
Indian software and services exports were $9.2bn in fiscal 2003-04, up 30% on the previous year, with BPO exports contributing an additional $3.6bn.
