Motorola Inc’s Mobile Data Division has come out with a software product family designed to provide the link necessary to take notebook personal computers into the era of wireless computing on most public shared and private data radio networks. The new WaveGuide software is a run-time communications and application software developer’s toolkit designed to operate in conjunction with Motorola’s internal and external line of radio packet modems and MS-DOS computers. It is also compatible with IBM Corp’s new PCradio line, which features the Motorola RPM 400i radio packet modem. The line-up includes the WaveGuide Developer’s Toolkit and the WaveGuide Run-Time Environment. Applications developed using WaveGuide can be used on any WaveGuide-supported network rather being tied to one network or another by a proprietary modem interface. Applications interact with the radio packet modem through a common service interface so that multiple MS-DOS applications can share a single modem without conflict. The Run-Time Environment includes a Session Manager which handles all data transfer between the laptop and a Motorola radio packet modem. Waveguide ships are set for December; no prices.
