A report reveals that about 33 million adults used internet daily during 2012, a rise from 16 million users in 2006.
According to the office for national statistics, internet usage for telephone or video calls rose faster than expected, with 32% of adults using the for this purpose.
The number of adults using the internet daily in 2012 was four times the 8% rate projected in 2007.
According to the report, access to the Internet through a mobile phone had more than doubled during 2010 to 2012, with 51% of adults using portable or hand-held devices, an increase of 24%.
About 32% of adults had accessed Internet via mobile phone every day during the year.
Mobile phones have been less popular among older age groups with 8% of users aged 65 and older using a mobile phone to access the internet, while 15% used mobile devices of any sort.
The report also revealed that men are also more probable to use mobile devices than women, with 56% against 46%.
About 73% of the UK adults used the internet for sending and receiving emails, while 47% used the internet for online banking.
Additionally, 67% of adults used the internet for shopping in 2012, up from 53% in 2008.
