Mitsubishi Electric Corp has become the first company to take license Sony Corp’s Trinitron cathode ray tube technology, which has only one gun rather than the usual three and avoids the fuzziness when beams overlap. Mitsubishi plans to manufacture Aperture-Grille tubes using it and will incorporate the tubes into its own brand-name display monitors and OEM display monitors, and possibly also sell the tubes OEM. The company is of course already a leader in tubes made with Shadow-Mask technology used by all other manufacturers, and will continue making those as well. It will invest $11.5m in its Kyoto Works manufacturing facility in Japan for the new effort, and production is scheduled to begin later this year and will reach projected capacity of 500,000 a year by 1994 or 1995.
