The dearth of slots in so many MS-DOS micros – and often the puniness of the power supply, should mean that Backpack, from Microsolutions Computer Products Inc, DeKalb, Illinois, should have a lively market: Microbytes Daily reports that the Backpack is a small external floppy drive that plugs into the parallel port on the back – but don’t worry, it has its own parallel port so you can still hang the printer off it – or even daisychain the disks – runs off AC power and comes in 360Kb and 1.2Mb 5.25 and 1.44Mb 3.5 versions – $350 each; a 2.8Mb 3.5 version will cost $425 and the others are out in August; the thing operates under the control of a 10Kb .SYS file which is invoked by the CONFIG.SYS file.
