Meantime although Teledesic Corp will be a pure carrier, Microsoft Corp has its eye on the receiving end equipment, and according to PC Week, it has given up on the idea of using Modular Windows in television set-top boxes: instead, it is developing a completely new non-Windows operating system for the user end, while its Tiger video server system will run a variant of Windows NT. The new client operating system will have a non-Windows graphical interface specific to the type of device it is located on, a source familiar with the plans told the paper. Communications will be over Asynchronous Transfer Mode networks.
