Microsoft is shifting its European software distribution centre to the Netherlands from Germany following a video technology patent dispute with mobile phone and tablet maker Motorola Mobility.

Microsoft spokesman Thomas Baumgaertner was quoted by Reuters as saying that Microsoft would have preferred to keep its European distribution centre in Germany, where it has been for many years.

"But unfortunately the risk from disruptions from Motorola’s patent litigation is simply too high," Baumgaertner.

Motorola has earlier filed a lawsuit against Microsoft for using the H.264 video standard in Windows 7 and the Xbox, among other products.

Microsoft stated the move was already in progress, though a decision by a court in Mannheim, Germany is expected on 17 April.

A favourable ruling to Motorola could affect sales of Microsoft’s biggest products such as Windows 7 from Germany including other countries where the US software maker supplies products.

Bertelsmann’s services unit Arvato has been handling Microsoft’s distribution out of Germany till date.

Microsoft had earlier said Motorola Mobility Holdings is seeking $4bn patent royalties per year for use of technology used in the Xbox video-gaming system.
