Mercury PCN, Microtel and Unitel appear to have chosen a blameless route to persuade Europe and other markets to adopt the 1,800MHz frequency set aside by the UK government for future Personal Communication Network services: earlier this year the licensees chose to adopt the Groupe Speciale Mobile standard, which has been put forward as a potential pan-European cellular standard; now, Mercury, Unitel and Microtel have announced that in collaboration with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute they have come up with a GSM-based standard for the 1,800MHz frequency – dubbed DCS 1800 – on which they hope to base a memorandum of understanding with prospective European PCN operators.
