Maxtor Corp, San Jose has expanded its 2.5 disk drive family with two new models, the 84Mb 25084 and the 252Mb 25252. The 84Mb unit, at 0.39 thick and weighing 4.4oz is claimed to be the thinnest and lightest 2.5 drive available. Average seek time for both the 25084 and the 25252 is 12mS, with a track-to-track seek time of 2.5mS. The platters spin at 4,247 rpm and have 7.0mS average latency. The 25252 uses three platters to achieve 252Mb in a 0.67 high package. They are designed to withstand 15 Gs operating and 150 Gs non-operating shock, representing a claimed 50% increase over previous industry specifications. Both use a glass substrate platter. In seek mode, the 25084 and 25252 draw 1.8W and 1.9W respectively. In standby and sleep mode, the drain is as little as 0.10W. Evaluation pricing for the 25084 is $260 and for the 25252, $400, now. Volume production at the Singapore plant is scheduled to start in first quarter 1993.
