Causing shock among many EU and International Monetary Fund representatives, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has announced a referendum via Twitter.

After nearly five months of negotiations with the Greek government, EU leaders concluded a summit in Brussels stating that the bailout proposal will not be extended beyond Tuesday.

However, any hopes were shattered after Alexis Tsipras called for a referendum asking voters, weary of years of debt crises, to reject it.

The tweet said: "For us, our future generations, our history. For #Greece’s sovereignty & dignity #referendum."

The European market is expected to tumble after the prime minister’s decision for a referendum.

Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem said: "Not only has the Greek government rejected the last proposals by the institutions, you have to realise that those proposals already took advantage of the maximum flexibility."

"There are always two negotiating partners," Austria’s Hans Joerg Schelling said. "If someone wants to help, the other one has to accept the help. Greece didn’t do that."

Twitter has been a platform used by many politicians to announce their decisions and voice their opinion about various subjects over the years.
