SBC’s new Centrex (Central Office Exchange) IP service will use voice over packet transport in order to allow customers to integrate their own voice and data networks over a single LAN. Lucent’s technology will enable SBC to switch from a circuit switched network to a packet based one.
SBC’s Centrex IP solution will be available to customers in Chicago, Hartford, Houston, Los Angeles and Sacramento from September.
The deal relies on technology acquired by Lucent when it bought Spring Tide Networks in a $1.3 billion deal over two years ago.
