One of Lucent’s joint ventures in China, Lucent Technologies Fiber Optic Cable Comp. Ltd. (BFOC), has signed fibre optic cable contracts worth $28 million with Xinjiang Mobile, Xinjiang PTA and Qingdao PTB. Under the $13M contract in Xinjiang, BFOC will provide 2500km TrueWave RS fiber optic cable for Xinjiang’s provincial long haul backbone network. BFOC will provide Qingdao PTB with more than 100,000km of AllWave optical fiber to enhance Qingdao PTB’s broadband metro network services.
While the Chinese fiber optic business was signing deals for the future Lucent’s main fiber optic unit has received its first bid in an auction which is expected to net Lucent around $5 billion according to analysts. Alcatel have become the first company to enter the auction for the unit, which is the second largest fiber optic cable operator, behind Corning Inc.
