The location-based system, WeatherBug Protect, is available on Sprint phones and is designed to enhance student and staff safety throughout the school day and at outdoor events during the afternoon and evening.
Based on predefined parameters, any phone within a six-mile radius of a severe threat will receive alerts from the WeatherBug Protect system.
Custom alerts from the WeatherBug Network such as heat index, lightning detection warnings, wind gusts, as well as all the standard severe weather alerts issued from the National Weather Service (NWS), are sent to the
Sprint GPS-enabled phones.
Additionally, during an outdoor activity, for instance, faculty and staff carrying the Sprint phones can confirm that they have received notification of the severe weather-related event while moving the students to safety.
