Eager to cash in on the Windows boom and justify the $65m Lotus Development Corp spent on acquiring Samna Corp last year, the company has launched Ami Pro 2.0, which it describes as a major upgrade. Shipping this summer, version 2.0 offers new features such as outliner, power fields, master documents, and a scientific and equation editor. SmartIcons is an icon palette that users can customise to create their own single-click access to features. Ami Pro 2.0 also features Power Fields and an enhanced macro language, for the creation of automated documents and applications involving other Windows programs, sharing data through the Clipboard, dynamic data exchange or object linking and embedding technology. The package has an equation editor for the scientific and engineering markets to enable the creation of scientific and mathematical equations directly on the page, choosing from a set of 216 math symbols and Greek characters from a point-and-click palette. The word processor requires MS-DOS 3.0 or higher on a 286 or higher personal computer, a Windows display, 1Mb RAM and Windows 3.0. To work properly Ami Pro 2.0 really needs the power of a 386 machine and a mouse as well. It costs $495, however, current Ami Pro users can upgrade for $99, while Lotus Manuscript users are eligible to upgrade for $49.
