Lotus Development Corp has followed up its warning of cuts to come by announcing a 10% reduction in full-time employees meaning that about 420 will go – and tighter controls over discretionary expenses and efforts to reduce facilities costs, all of which will cost $14m to $18m in one-time charges against fourth quarter figures. Lotus expects to complete the cuts, mainly at the Cambridge headquarters facilities, by the end of first quarter 1992: they affect most areas bar sales, consulting services, word processing, Notes and cc:Mail. Lotus is thinks its Cambridge facilities are too expensive and is looking at cheaper alternatives in the area.
