Logitech Inc, Fremont, California believes that desktop publishing should be affordable for both business and home users, and accordingly is putting an introductory price of $180 on its Finesse program that runs on all MS-DOS machines from the original IBM Personal Computer up. It includes Bitstream Fontware to provide fonts that are included in many high-end packages – Swiss, Dutch, Courier, Charter and Symbol font families in plain, bold and italic typefaces. Users can create any type they need in sizes from 6 to 99 points, and the program can also be used with any of Bitstream’s additional font packages. The product uses a combination of pull-down menus, dialogue boxes and quick-keys for document creation, and a number of page templates are also included for those of limited imagination. Text can also be created in Finesse as well or imported from other applications, such as Microsoft Word, WordPerfect and WordStar; ASCII files can of course also be imported. Graphics can be added from the image library included in the package, or imported from other applications. And with Logitech’s ScanMan hand-held scanner, users can also scan images from outside sources directly into Finesse, edit them and integrate them into text. Layout tools include kerning and leading, hyphenation, automatic text wrap-around, cut and paste, find and replace, variable gutter and column widths, on-screen rulers, adjustable paragraph formats, 16 different line and frame styles, nine full patterns, single- or double-page spread preview, and automatic headers, footers and page numbers. Mouse-based, it works with the Logitech Mouse and compatible pointing devices, and it supports a wide variety of matrix, laser and Postscript printers.
