Robertson, who is also the founder and CEO of MP3tunes.com and CEO of SIPphone Inc, has set up ajaxWrite.com, a new online word processor based on the Ajax (asynchronous JavaScript and XML) programming model to provide free word processing and the ability to save to a local disk in Microsoft .doc format.

The ajaxWrite service only works in Javascript-enabled Firefox browsers, but it is just the first in a series of new web-based applications, according to Robertson. While easy to use, the first version of ajaxWrite is very simple and is intended to be beta code.

ajaxWrite will face stiff competition not only from Microsoft but also Google Inc, which earlier this month acquired Upstartle LLC, a beta-stage Silicon Valley firm that was six months into a public beta test of Writely.com, a more advanced word processing application with online storage and collaboration functionality.
