Linotype Inc of Hauppauge, New York, has signed a licensing agreement with Adobe Systems which gives it the right to develop, manufacture and distribute PostScript versions of Mergenthaler Type Library – which contains more than 1,700 typefaces, including the original designs of Helvetica, Optima and Palatino – starting with over 145 typefaces available for release by September 30 and adding more than one per day with quarterly releases after that: there are over 20 PostScript printers and type centres being offered from major computer, printer, and typesetting companies such as Apple Computer, DEC, IBM, Linotype, Texas Instruments, and Wang Laboratories, and Adobe says it’s important to provide an increasing variety of typefaces for the PostScript products and that the Linotronic laser Imagesetters are are the only high-resolution PostScript devices available today.
