The Associated Press reports that Latin is making a big come-back in American schools, with an estimated 500,000 or more pupils studying the language today – and with worldwide networks like the Internet playing an accelerating role in people’s lives, schoolkids are finding that Latin can get them round the langauge problem when they want to converse with pupils in another country: high-school students in Medford, Oregon have been exchanging messages with teenagers in Belgium with Latin the lingua franca – and the great thing about the computer network is that you don’t suffer the embarrassment of trying to pronounce the words.
