It will be former Netscape server SVP and general manager John Paul who gets the reins to America Online’s Netscape browser project, though quite what it will be doing is still unclear. In their respective filings with the SEC, America Online and Sun Microsystems Inc talked extensively about the creation of what they called the New Browser – distinct from Netscape’s existing Communicator browser – to compete with Microsoft Corp’s Internet Explorer though there was no mention of the browser at Tuesday’s news conference in New York. Moreover the relationship between AOL and Sun, which up until Monday had been referred to as the AOL-Sun alliance, is now named the Sun-Netscape Alliance. Paul is SVP of the new AOL products unit.
