Japan’s major personal computer manufacturers are setting ambitious sales targets for the year to next March, expecting the endlessly awaited upturn in the Japanese economy finally to arrive and to boost corporate spending on information systems: Fujitsu Ltd says it expects a 35% jump in its domestic personal computer sales to 420,000 units this year, adding that it saw sales of personal computers and client-server systems in April and May as much as 40% up on a year ago in some sectors; IBM Japan Ltd plans a near doubling of sales of both personal computers and workstations to 350,000 and 20,000; market leader NEC Corp forecasts an 11% increase in its sales to 1.52m, and Toshiba Corp, which does 30% of its total sales on the domestic market, expects its Japanese sales to increase 11% to over 200,000.
