Japan to pass 100 million mobile mark in 2006

The Japan Electronics and Information and Technology Industries Association, better known as JEITA, has said that it expects Japan's cellular subscriber base to pass the 100 million mark in 2006, representing about 72% of the population.

JEITA, formed on November 1, 2000, when the Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) and Japan Electronic Industries Development Association (JEIDA) merged also expects the number of 3G subscribers in Japan to reach 23 million in 2004, rising to 55.5 million in 2006, or just over half of all cell phone users.

Cell phone penetration in Japan is currently 55% of the population.
