JEITA, formed on November 1, 2000, when the Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) and Japan Electronic Industries Development Association (JEIDA) merged also expects the number of 3G subscribers in Japan to reach 23 million in 2004, rising to 55.5 million in 2006, or just over half of all cell phone users.
Cell phone penetration in Japan is currently 55% of the population.
