IVK company is planning a major entry into the Russian personal computer assembly market with a plan to compete directly with Stins Coman Assemble and assemble and sell up to 2,000 units per month from mid-1994. The operation began last year and started with with an 80386-based product. IVK has created capacity for assembling up to 700,000 computers a year. A major part of the company’s strategy will be using domestically manufactured components. Approximately 50% of components (by value) will be of Russian origin and include video boards, power supplies, and disk controllers. To monitor the quality of the components it buys from abroad, IVK is also planning to create a quality control division based outside Russia. IVK also has a contract to repair Sun Microsystems Inc computers and it is currently negotiating a contract for the assembly of Sun products in Zelenograd, near Moscow.
